A fun night in Fenway as Boston defeats the Yankees 6-2!
Let’s begin with the sensational start by Nathan Eovaldi.
5.1 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 Ks
54 of 71 pitches were strikes. 13 swing and misses.
He had fantastic fastball command and an electric curveball. Don’t forget about the nasty split thrown in there, too along with the slider!
I was surprised Alex Cora yanked him so early. Anthony Rizzo hit a solo shot and Aaron Judge beat out an infield single in the 6th. His day was done after that with a 3-1 lead.
Eovaldi’s start played a MASSIVE role in the outcome.
On the other hand, Gerrit Cole was a disaster!
Xander Bogaerts rocked a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 1st off a 2-1 change up right down broadway. What was Cole thinking? Also, Rafael Devers earned a 2-out-walk in the previous AB which obviously came back to bite big time.
Kyle Schwarber tacked on a solo bomb of his own with a 1-2 count in the 3rd.
I’m sure it’s not easy if you’re Aaron Boone pulling Gerrit Cole with only 50 pitches, but I give him credit.
Wait what’s that? Did Cole take himself out?

Wild. I am fascinated to hear more information.
This is literally why the organization decided to pay Cole the big bucks.
OCTOBER baseball. Postseason play. On the road vs your biggest rival.
Oof.
The Yankees didn’t have many opportunities offensively throughout the game, but when they did it was ugly.
Giancarlo Stanton took Eovaldi deep in the 1st, but it smoked the Green Monster and stayed in the park. The ball was annihilated for….. a single….
The second time Stanton drove a pitch off the Monster it was even worse….. How so, you ask?
Aaron Judge was sent home from first-base in a 3-1 game with only 1 out and this is how it ended

Bad bad bad bad baseball.
According to Jesse Rogers of ESPN, the Yankees were thrown out at home 22 times this regular season which is tied for most in the league.
Pitching was the difference maker. Boston clearly had more swag all night and once Cole left the game, their confidence was rolling to another level.
The bullpen really stepped up. Ryan Brasier, Tanner Houck, and Hansel Robles deserve praise. They sure had Cora’s back because Eovaldi was dealing. He would have been destroyed by local media if that decision backfired. Anyway, the entire Red Sox pitching staff finished with 0 walks.
Yankees issued 5 walks.
Now we get another AL East showdown.
Red Sox vs Rays
Thank you Baseball Gods!
