Flyers Get Their Revenge on Flames!

Pregame Notes:

  • The Rick Tocchet and Paul Holmgren ceremony was so poorly executed to the point I was embarrassed. No one was in attendance and I chalk that up to awful planning by the organization along with lack of care by fans
  • Oskar Lindblom scratched makes a ton of sense to me. I always questioned prior to his breakout year what his ceiling was. The Flyers clearly have expectations that are significantly higher than mine. I feel bad criticizing his play based on what he’s dealt with to be honest, but his performance in Dallas was unacceptable. (You can make the argument he was set up for failure playing on the 4th line)
  • Ryan Ellis put on IR. Horrendous luck to start his Flyers tenure with injuries. Can Justin Braun keep this level of play up for the long run here?

First Period – The powerplay truly makes me sick!

  • MacEwen hits Markstrom on the forecheck behind the net which I find hilarious. Such a “I’m fighting for my job every shift as a 4th liner” type of move. Patrick Brown follows up with a backhand shot/pass through the crease.
  • Justin Braun jumps up in the play wheeeeeeling down the right side. I still laugh every time he provides solid offensive decisions this year. So make that 2 times now I found comedy within 4 minutes of action
  • What’s not funny? Brassard taking a highsticking penalty. Solid kill, but momentum lost
  • Flames Goal (1-0): Provorov turnover in the neutral zone leads to Flames going the other way. Johnny Gaudreau (welcome home) finds Kylington up top who one-times it off Couturier past Carter Hart. Gotta be sharper if you’re Provorov
  • Konecny ROBBED back door after excellent offensive zone draw by Brassard!! Flyers head to the PP. This is major considering their man-advantage has been disgusting as of late
  • Couturier ROBBED back door! What the hell is going on?! Markstrom comes up large on multiple occasions, but it looked like Coutsy had a chance to tuck his shot closer to the post
  • Mangiapane called for holding the stick. 5-on-3 for about 25-30 seconds. TERRIBLE pass from Couturier who couldn’t take advantage of a 4-on-2. Lazy nonchalant pass deflected
  • Tkachuk goes to the box for interference. Here we go again…… Kevin Hayes turnover | 2-on-1 the other way. You can’t make this up!

Second Period – Tons of emotions for Kevin Hayes

  • Ivan Provorov joins up ice, excellent rush. Rips one on net from slot. Sense of urgency to start the 2nd
  • Scott Laughton cross checking killed off and earns a penalty shot coming out of the box!
  • Markstrom doesn’t really bite on Laughton’s attempt to freeze him, throws a two-pad stack to make the save
  • Flyers Goal (1-1): Kevin Hayes originally tripped…gets up, tried to force a pass, the puck found him again as he buries it! Immediately points up to the sky in celebration and the chills running down my spine couldn’t be more aggressive.
  • Flyers way more aggressive this period. 4 on 4 flow, creating turnovers, crashing the net, etc
  • MacEwen extremely noticeable shift BUZZING with 6 minutes to go in the period. Almost had a wrap around bingo
  • A few times tonight I felt the Flyers were trying an extra pass when they could have peppered even more shots on Markstrom. I reference this after Farabee’s line entered the zone with speed and came up empty handed
  • Tkachuk back to the sin bin! Here we go again (x2) 3:39 remaining
  • The Flames start off their PK instantly with an amazing 2-on-1 chance. Wtf! Carter Hart bailed his teammates out
  • Hayes exits the ice in serious pain after clearly being tripped
  • MacEwen at the doorstep! He’s noticeable yet again! SO close. 4th line has been without Brown, Laughton/JVR joining that line
  • JVR tries to drop the mitts with Coleman?! Alright James! Refs don’t allow it and somehow ONLY calls JVR?!
  • Flames will start the 3rd with a peeper…..

Third Period – Plenty of Chances to Win!

  • Kevin Hayes is back on the bench
  • CLAUDE GIROUX YOU FILTHY BASTARD! AN ABSOLUTE DANGLE AND CUT ACROSS THE CREASE FOR A BEAUTIFUL CHANCE! ALL SWEDISH NO FINNISH!

  • Sanhiem net drive opens up MacEwen as third guy high. Shoots from far out, but just highlighting his success tonight
  • Amazing save by Carter Hart on Backlund redirect
  • JVR CRANKS IRON ON 2-ON-1 WITH COUTURIER!!
  • Ristolainen continues to throw his body around physically. The crowd loves it
  • Johnny Gaudreau stopped by Carter Hart on an incredible wrap around. One of his bread and butter moves
  • Kevin Hayes tripped for the third time tonight without drawing a penalty. Pretty ridiculous IMO but I guess I understand with under 2 minutes remaining not wanting to decide it on a PP. (Not that the Flyers would do anything with it)
  • Scott Laughton and Ivan Provorov both with Grade A chances in the slot! Laughton seemed to be slashed as he tried to release. Let the pushing and shoving continue!
  • Joel Farabee potential breakaway with 40 seconds left. Don’t love his decision to try and put the puck around his defender while attempting to dance around him.
  • Claude Giroux fakes a clap bomb that CLEARLY fooled Markstrom. Tried to Pass it instead of shooting?! This is what I was talking about back in the 2nd period!!

Overtime – FAR PAD!!

  • FLYERS GOAL (2-1): SEAN COUTURIER FAR PAD TO CAM ATKINSON OFF THE REBOUND!!
