Nylander Nets 2 as Flyers Shutout by Maple Leafs

Pregame Notes 

  • John Tavares did not take warmups and was ruled out for the game. Heading into the matchup he leads the Leafs in points so to say that’s a major blow just isn’t enough.
  • I’m worried about how much time the Flyers had off considering they last played in Washington D.C. Saturday night. How will that impact their start?
  • Ristolainen played pretty strong in that win. Will he build off that individually?

First Period – Sloppy, Sloppy, Sloppy!

  • Farabee, Atkinson, Brassard start off with a great scoring chance. Farabee can’t bury
  • Scott Laughton hooking penalty in the offensive zone below the goal line. All penalties are obviously bad, but taking one so far away from your own net is painful. Less than 3 minutes into the action, which makes finding rhythm early more difficult.
  • Thompson and Couturier 2-on-1 short handed. Rebound was THERE!
  • Carter Hart standing on his head early after 7 Toronto shots 7 minutes in. Flyers struggling to be crisp
  • Keith Yandle keeps the puck in & Cam Atkinson stopped at the doorstep.
  • Patrick Brown makes excellent play at defensive zone blue line which leads to a solid chance as he was getting angled off
  • Giroux draws a penalty. 90-year-old Jason Spezza called for holding
  • BOOOOOOOOOOOs pour down as the PP goes to waste. 1 shot and 4 times the puck was cleared
  • Giroux draws another penalty. Tripped up along the half wall in their own zone with 2:30 remaining. Opportunity here to head into the locker room with a lead that’s not deserved
  • Provorov loses puck control at the blue line and Toronto kills off the first minute easily
  • Awful pass by Brassard that goes all the way back down the ice by Carter Hart. PP ends
  • Lucky to be tied. Let’s see how the next 20 goes….

Second Period – Falling Behind, But Showing Life Late

  • Auston Matthews twists and turns using his body to protect the puck from Couturier before attempting a wrap around. Let’s highlight how hard that is to do against one of the best 2-way centers in the game. (Unbelievable save by Hart. I saw the super slowmo later and had to go back to this bulletpoint. Wow that was close)
  • Atkinson got away with a trip behind Maple Leafs net. Surprised no call considering the PPs rewarded to Flyers to end the previous period
  • TK, Giroux, Couturier line sparks an odd man rush. Justin Braun crashes the net, too. TK chippy after the whistle looking for energy. Good idea with the team’s effort to this point
  • Kampf left wide open in the slot after Seeler and Yandle can’t connect D to D. Carter Hart makes the save!
  • Marner or Kerfoot (I couldn’t tell) left wide open in the slot. Carter Hart makes the save! (Yes, I repeated the sentence above) Doesn’t matter who. Things need to be cleaned up!
  • Ristolainen’s helmet was ripped off his head. Flyers head back to the PP
  • Yandle running QB is best option right now. #analysis
  • BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOs continue after another horrendous man advantage.
  • Maple Leafs Goal (1-0): Turnover by Lindblom. Auston Matthews finds Muzzin who passes to Nylander. Goal called off originally. The puck hit off Nylander’s foot as he pointed his toe up. No kicking motion. I have no issue with the call whatsoever

  • Couturier walks in and lets a HEAVY wrist shot go…. Completely missed the net
  • JVR, Lindblom, and Laughton generate noise and net drive. A little life in the building
  • McEwen throws a big body hit
  • Sanhiem nice shot on net from the blue line. 3rd line creates havoc after the whistle with 2:46 to go
  • Couturier looking for Braun on 2-0n-1. Great Toronto backcheck. What world am I living in when Justin Braun is jumping up in the play that confidently? His point total supports it!
  • Joel Farabee MASSIVE board battle won down low and the puck bounces through the slot area
  • I’ll give credit here: Since going down 1-0, they’ve responded with urgency. It shouldn’t take falling behind to do it though

Third Period – Outworked.

  • Wayne Simmonds knocks down 6’4 Ristolainen with a solid check in the corner. Good for Simmer, miss him!
  • Yandle loses an edge in front of Carter Hart resulting in Nylander alone… Carter gloves it…
  • Provorov slashing penalty….. probably the worst case scenario in terms of starting the 3rd
  • Maple Leafs PP Goal (2-0): After a beautiful passing sequence leaving Ritchie scoreless, Nylander records his 2nd of the night with a wicked wrister that beat Carter clean.
  • Here we go again: Laughton taken down in the neutral zone and the Flyers are going on the Peco Powerplay. I would love to type that with enthusiasm, but they’ve struggled too much tonight
  • G, TK, Coutsy, JVR, and Yandle ripped a few good pucks on net. No finish
  • Giroux goes to the box for high sticking. Gives Marner a hell of a look. Been looking for a replay for about 4 minutes now so I guess I won’t be getting that
  • CARTER HART ARE YOU SERIOUS?!

  • Maple Leafs Goal (3-0): PP just ended. Justin Braun beat to a loose puck by Kerfoot who wheels around the net and finds Kaše. Rips a one-timer from the slot.
  • I will classify this one as your classic dud. They laid an egg
