The NBA Finals: Is Something Missing?

I am enjoying the NBA Finals.

This is not a hate post.

The series is currently tied 2-2 and we just witnessed a wild ending to Game 4. Giannis’ block, Devin Booker clearly recording his 6th foul, and Khris Middleton dropping 40.

I can’t be the only one thinking something is missing though, right?

It’s weird because from the surface I can totally point out awesome headlines.

Chris Paul – One of the best point guards in NBA history has a chance to win his first title, solidifying his already Hall of Fame career. In 18-19 this franchise won 19 games and last year they were under .500. His calming presence controlling the floor has been special for a young team.

Devin Booker – At 24 years old, we are witnessing one of the best young scorers in the game. He has now scored 27, 31, and 41 points in 3 of the 4 games in the Finals.

Monty Williams – His ability to lead and control in emotional moments has been highlighted.

The Journey of Giannis, Middleton, & Mike Budenholzer – This organization has been in the mix for years now. Is it finally their time to get over the hump? Jrue Holiday was a crucial acquisition, but he hasn’t lived up to expectations. Can the crew pick him up? To be fair, I don’t think there will ever be a world where Budenholzer gets praised.

There’s plenty more I can point out: Mikal Bridges, Brook Lopez, Bobby Portis, the list goes on and on.

My point is simple: there’s clearly a ton of drama yet there’s still a hole for me.

As much as some hated Lebron vs the Warriors for 3 straight years and trust me, it was getting old…

You need the elite of the elite of the elite of the elite in the finals.

These are 2 very solid teams fighting their asses off and leaving everything out on the floor.

Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, a healthy Kawhi Leonard.

The NBA Finals needs a top of the top guy.

I know what everyone is thinking.. Giannis!

Eh.

I get bored watching him get to the free throw line area, backing up as a defender keeps 10 feet of distance, and waiting for him to charge full speed for a layup.

It’s effective, I get it. Just not the most entertaining brand of basketball in the world.

He’s obviously a special talent, but it doesn’t even compare to what it’s like to be heavily invested in the players mentioned above.

Basketball fans are PASSIONATE about Lebron winning another title or adding another loss to his finals resumè.

Everyone has an opinion on Kevin Durant. He joined a super team. Now what’s next for him? It’s KD vs The World in his mind. Experiencing his killer mindset bucket after bucket is unique.

Steph Curry is one of the most electric shooters we’ve ever seen. The amount of “HOLY SHIT” moments when pulling up from anywhere is must watch.

Does anyone truly care about Giannis or Devin Booker winning?

Eh.

While this is nice and fun, I need more.

This whole narrative that it’s refreshing to see two teams and some new talent on the floor trying to win a championship is nice in theory, but it isn’t playing out that way. At least not for me.
